I’m an experienced editor who, like the prairie grasses, is thoroughly rooted in the place where I was born, grew up and continue to live. I was raised on the family farm, educated at the University of Kansas and now call Missouri home. In a region where there’s more space than place, paying attention — appreciating small, often overlooked things — is a necessity. I have had the great good fortune to work with talented writers who were determined to communicate clearly — often artfully — and effectively. For more than 30 years, that meant editing stories for newspapers. Since I began freelancing in 2014, I’ve continued to devote myself to improving prose in different formats — keeping an eye on the overall while never neglecting details.

“Everyone needs an editor” is both a cliché and a truism. Editing can be the crucial difference in how readers, clients and customers perceive and receive your work. Awkward or unclear writing, wordiness, redundancies, lack of transitions, improper sequence of tenses, misspellings, typos, repeated information, misplaced punctuation, poor grammar and inconsistent style are more than avoidable smudges. They can amount to exit ramps for the audience.
Do I need a copy editor or a proofreader?
Copy editing also can include fact checking. Fact checking can also be a separate step performed by another person. Guarding against the inclusion of misinformation and unfounded claims has become one of the biggest challenges facing all writers.
Line editing, sometimes called heavy copy editing, focuses on the sentence and paragraph level, ensuring a smooth reading experience, addressing extraneous or hackneyed constructions, imprecision, tonal shifts and point-of-view issues.
